“Supplements are the companion to foods that ensure we have what we need to heal.”   Dr. Fabrizio Mancini

One of my basic strategies for self-healing includes the use of nutritional supplements. I believe we cannot be healthy without them. And I believe that we cannot get all our nutritional needs met by simply eating a good diet. There are too many variables in our diets today, regardless of how many healthy foods we consume. Fields where food is grown have been depleted of nutrients, for example, and we don’t know whether our fruits and vegetables were picked ripe, too ripe, or not ripe enough. All of these factors affect the nutrient quality of food.

Every morning, I fix myself a shake, and I sneak a lot of great nutrients into it, including essential fatty acids, a high-quality protein blend, fiber, berries, and a greens mixture. I also take my morning supplements with my shake. I strongly believe that this regimen helps maintain my health at peak levels.

Could you possibly not need supplements and eat a diet that might be raw or fully organic, or from your own garden, and be healthy? Perhaps, but I haven’t met that fortunate person yet!

Google the word vitamins and you’ll get millions of hits, most with the wildest claims you’ve ever heard. Supplements are hyped to increase energy, reverse cancer, prolong life, stimulate sex drive, and more. There are so many hucksters hawking stuff that you don’t know what to believe or what to take. It’s confusing, to say the least. In this chapter, I’ll help you navigate these rough waters of information and show you what to take, based on credible scientific research and your personal health concerns.

If you took only a few supplements, they should be a group of key products, including a multivitamin/mineral that I call core-level healing. These form the basic, foundational supplements you need as nutritional health insurance. The recently published work on multivitamins and multiminerals is encouraging. For example, a study reported in the Journal of Nutrition showed that individuals taking a daily multivitamin supplement experienced fewer heart attacks than those who did not. The study found that men taking supplements had 22 percent fewer heart at- tacks, and women taking supplements had 33 percent fewer heart attacks than those people who didn’t take supplements. Why such positive findings? We know for a fact that several vitamins and minerals help protect against clogging of the arteries and heart disease.

Here are the top supplements that can help you heal:

Anti-Stress

1)     L theanine: 200–500 milligrams when under stress.

2)     B-complex: Daily. Each pill should supply 100 micrograms of vitamin B12 and biotin, 400 micrograms of folic acid, and 100 milligrams of all the other B vitamins. Take it along with food to enhance absorption.

3)     Magnesium: 300–600 milligrams of magnesium daily to counter the effects of stress.

Digestive Repair

1)     Probiotic supplements: Follow label directions. One serving should be at least 1 billion CFU (Colony Forming Units).

2)     Digestive enzymes: Follow label directions.

Joint Support

1)     Hyaluronic acid (HA): 40–80 milligrams daily for joint problems.

2)     Glucosamine/chondroitin: 1,500 milligrams daily for joint problems.

3)     MSM: 1,000–3,000 milligrams daily, with meals, for osteoarthritis.

Prevent Heart Disease

1)     CoQ10: 50 to 200 milligrams daily.

2)     Red yeast rice extract: 1,200 milligrams daily taken with
food.

Brain Support

1)     Choline: 425 milligrams per day for women and 550 milligrams per day for men.

2)     GPC: 1,200 milligrams daily.

3)     Vinpocetine: Up to 10 milligrams a day in two doses
paired with food.

4)     ALC: 500–1,500 milligrams two or three times a day, preferably on an empty stomach.

5)     Ginkgo biloba: 120–240 milligrams daily.
